Adjectives (Video and Lesson Preview)
Now let's look at words that describe nouns and pronouns and words that describe verbs. These “describers,” or “modifiers” as they are called, really give us more information about the nouns and verbs. They answer more questions about the verb or noun. Let's first take a look at the words that describe nouns.
Adjectives
Hey, it’s time for the adjective to speak.
Thanks for welcoming me to this show. You are right. It’s time for me to speak. You see, I talk about the noun. That’s my entire job. I come into sentences and describe the noun. Without me, nouns are just plain and boring. People are always asking questions about the noun. Here are the questions they ask me, the adjective, about the noun.
What kind of noun is this?
How many nouns are there?
Which noun are you talking about?
The answers to these questions come strictly from the adjective’s mouth.
Take a look at the adjective at work in the sentence:
Example: Bill is great.
What kind of person is Bill?
The word that describes Bill is “great,” so “great” is an adjective.
Example:
Seven monkeys ate all the bananas.
How many monkeys? “Seven,” so “seven” is an adjective.
Summary
What is an adjective?
An adjective is a word or a group of words that gives us more information about a noun.
Adjectives answer the following questions about nouns:
Example: She was wearing a red dress.
What kind of dress? Answer: a red dress. Red is an adjective.
