Success through
the Science of Reading
We are so proud of Mackenzie. Our reading coaches helped her to go from "promotion in doubt" to Student of the Year.
Here's what her mom had to say:
"My daughter entered 1st grade in a new school. We were told her reading was below grade level and her promotion to the 2nd grade would be in doubt. They assumed it wasn’t possible for her to catch up. My husband and I sought help, we learned of Scholars Skills and from day one it’s been quite a great experience.
They didn’t judge my husband and I. They taught us how to teach our child at home and created a wonderful learning environment for my child to feel free of shame and to learn at her pace. We saw our daughter growing more and more confident week after week. Today roughly five months later, my daughter’s promotion to the 2nd grade is no longer in doubt, and she was even given Student of the Year Award. We are so grateful for Scholar Skills!!" |

"We happily recommend the Scholar Skills Reading program. The staff is attentive and diligent. My daughter has increased her reading by two levels. They have given her an invaluable boost of confidence to belief in her abilities and talents. They have found the tools to motivate her to excel. She is happy and eager to go to tutoring each week. We cannot thank Pastor Vieira and his team enough for their work. Thank you!"

"ScholarSkills is excellent. Reverend Vieira and staff are very passionate about helping the children and go to great lengths to see that they succeed. In three months time my daughter has jumped four reading levels and improved in all her math scores. These results came faster than I or her teachers could have anticipated. All of my daughter's teachers have commented on her huge improvement and how her confidence has soared. Thank you ScholarSkills for the great work that you continue to do."

My daughter began tutoring at Scholar Skills for their summer sessions in person in 2019 and I noticed a change in her reading in a matter of 6 weeks. More recently she began tutoring sessions online and I can see a difference already. She is more confident in her reading and as her tutor always tells her she is now trusting her sounds when trying to pronounce more difficult words." |

Why is Sentence Smart Unique?
Sentence Smart is unique because it's a "hands-on" multisensory learning experience.
It's much more than an online program. Our multi-sensory curriculum requires students to use physical books, color-coded cards, magnetic pieces, and other tangible learning resources. This Visual Interactive Tactile Auditory Learning (or VITAL) Orton-Gillingham strategy cultivates the whole brain and gives students and teachers all the modalities that are crucial to learning. Students touch, sing, and get excited about sitting for focused work because the tasks engage all of their senses. As importantly, it keeps down screen time so that students can learn by doing instead of simply watching.
Sentence Smart is an "out of the box," Orton-Gillingham solution for reading comprehension and sentence construction. It combines online activities with hands-on-learning. Students learn by watching and doing. Screen time can make kids passive: they watch videos, click a few times to answer some questions, and walk away--without learning anything of substance with depth. But Sentence Smart's blended learning approach stimulates the whole brain and body to learn at the same time.
Kids touch real learning tools (not just screens). They learn by using magnetic pieces and color-coded cards to physically disassemble, analyze, and reassemble words and sentences. They read physical books (not just PDF's). They write in actual notebooks (not just digital ones). This hands-on approach allows students to learn by actively participating in the learning process. They "make" words and sentences with tangible resources, which allows them to see or x-ray the structures of words and sentences. Because they are using movable pieces, they can rearrange word and sentence structures. This syntactic sense makes it far easier for them to create and decode complex sentences.

The Sentence Smart Language Arts Curriculum is also unique because it combines several subjects that have all been shown to improve reading comprehension and writing skills when taught together.
Sentence Smart combines phonics, grammar, vocabulary, and social studies into one language arts curriculum that improves both reading comprehension and writing skills at the same time. Phonics helps kids to decode the sounds that create words. Vocabulary helps them to decode the meanings of words. Grammar helps them to decode the meanings of sentences, and social studies helps them to build the background knowledge they need to understand everything they read.
Phonics, grammar, vocabulary, and social studies also help students to write creatively and correctly. Phonics helps students to spell well. Grammar and vocabulary help them to communicate their thoughts effectively, and social studies helps them to learn the content that brings depth and objectivity to their writing.
Sentence Smart is also unique because it focuses on word and sentence comprehension instead of simply directing children to read whole passages (which they can't decode) and to "practice" answering questions which they don't understand.
Sentence comprehension is the key to reading comprehension. And the key to sentence comprehension is word and sentence analysis. Sentence Smart equips students to turn words and sentences into tangible structures and parts which can be easily assembled, disassembled, and analyzed. This program cultivates a multi-sensory, interactive approach to reading comprehension which helps students to learn and decode new words and to think, talk, and write intelligently about the connections that create meaning within and between sentences. Sentence Smart can be taught to students from grades K-12—and beyond.
